A Team of Characters

As you get to know each individual character within, you're deepening your self awareness. But if you want to begin to change a long-standing patterns of behavior, you have to go a step further and understand how these characters relate to each other.

That's where the metaphor of the Inner Team is useful. Imagine each of these characters sitting around a conference table to make a decision together. Two or three characters will likely dominate the discussion. Others will get talked over. Still others will say silent. Some didn't even get invited to the discussion.

Through the methods of ITD, you can learn how to get the loudest, most dominant characters to take a step back, and make room for the quieter voices to be heard. As you welcome these overlooked voices back into the discussion, you'll find that they often have the solutions to the most pressing problems in your life.

As you learn to make your Inner Team more inclusive and diverse, it can transform your inner world from a fractious rabble to a high-performing team.

Where once you had only one or two solutions to the challenges you face in life, now you have many.

Where you once expended energy trying to suppress a part of who you are, now you can regain access to its insights and strengths.

Tamar Kagan, PCC

When I first learned about this work, I knew it was the piece I'd been looking for in my coaching practice.

ITD allowed my clients to become more aware of the parts of themselves which were in the way of achieving their coaching goals, and were able to see new and often surprising pathways forward. They also developed greater compassion for themselves which further allowed them to stay in the work even when it was challenging.

The ITD framework is deep and wise, while being very accessible for all clients.

Inner Team Dialogue is a coaching technique that every coach should have in their tool belt.

It allows your clients to give voice to the "Committee in their head" and, by doing this, finally achieve the breakthroughs that they need to achieve their goals.

Paul masterfully leads coaches through a program that helps you understand the theory and how to use these techniques with your clients.

ITD allows you to get to the root cause of what's keeping you stuck, and getting in the way of achieving your goals.

By exploring which member of the Inner Team is saying what, ITD untangles your inner conflicts, enabling you to break automatic behavior patterns that no longer serve you.

Your personality is made of multiple parts. Do you know who they are, and what they want?

Are you driven or laid back? Adventurous or cautious?

Like other forms of parts work, ITD is based on the premise that you're all of these. You're driven and laid back. Adventurous and cautious.

There's a world of difference between saying "I am driven" and "I have a driven part within me."

All of our most consistent patterns of thought, feeling, belief and behavior are associated with these parts. Your dominant patterns of behavior - from people pleasing to over-thinking - each arise from a distinctive, recognizable part within.

In ITD, we call these parts "characters" because they feel like whole people. And just like whole people, they have their own habits, preferences and goals, and want to be seen, heard and valued.

The ITD system gives you a simple way to recognize these characters within you, and to understand their motivations, beliefs, what they want for you, and what they want to protect you from.

As you get to know them and they begin to trust you, it becomes possible to direct their actions to align with what you most want to create in your life.

What do resistance to change, ambivalence, indecision and self-criticism have in common?

They're all signs of conflict between members of your Inner Team.

ITD is how you resolve these conflicts.

The Vision of ITD

ITD offers a radically inclusive and appreciative view of personality.

It celebrates all of who you are, inviting you to re-integrate the parts of yourself you have previously identified as negative.

As you embrace the diversity of your inner world,  you will naturally become more inclusive in our outer world.

As you apply ITD methods and principles to your own life, you will expand your self-awareness, boost your self-compassion, and experience choice about how you act, even when this deviates from your old, established patterns.
